The way I taught him was to sing the note names to get your strum pattern, and to strum each syllable.
"E minor DEE  DEE  AY, E minor DEE DEE AY..."

*The notes are both 'B' but I hear it as adding flavor to the Em rather than as a chord change
**Releasing the A gives you these three strings open (G), though you barely sound it at all
