D A He says, "You're causing us officers so much grief, D E A Why don't you give us some relief? D G D Why don't you call the fire brigade? G A D Or maybe why don't you try shovelling the smoke up the chimney with a spade."

D A I borrowed a spade from the woman next door D E A And I broke up the smoke that remained on the floor. G D I was shovelling away, till the closing of day G A D and I was singing a smoke-shovelling song

D A After working so hard I went out to my yard D E A And I looked up to my chimney so long, (there was nothing to see there). G D Just a thousand foot high, way into the sky G A D Was a pillar of smoke full of song.
